The Best Ramen Bowls

The Best Ramen Bowls

True story: my new neighbor just informed me that for the last seven months, she has been eating ramen almost every single day. Sometimes, she even eats it at 6 in the morning for breakfast. While I do love a good bowl of ramen myself, I'm not sure I fit into that level of obsession. So when I set out to research the best ramen bowls, I had an excellent source. Ramen bowls are traditionally made from ceramic due to its sturdiness and insulation. It's not just the material that is important, however. The shape of the bowl is also an important factor. Ramen bowls need to be wide enough at the top to expertly display and disperse the ingredients, but not too wide so as to let chopsticks fall in. If you're not a ramen connoisseur like my neighbor, it can be a bit confusing to decipher the best ramen bowls. Here are some of our favorites.

While there are a lot of excellent features to these bowls, the durability is perhaps our favorite. Simply put, these bowls will last years. Made of gorgeous melamine, they are incredibly durable and yet wonderfully lightweight. Virtually drop-proof, you can toss them in the dishwasher for easy cleaning.

Pros:

  • Perfectly sized at 37-ounce capacity.

Cons:

  • Although you can wash this in a dishwasher, you can not use these ramen bowls in the microwave.

KooK Japanese Ceramic Noodle Bowl

Aesthetically pleasing and large

The bright red of these bowls makes for an eye-catching pop of color on your dining room table.
Best Ceramic Set

Find on Amazon

The pop of red inside these eye-catching ceramic bowls make these a cut above the rest. Although these don’t have a built-in chopstick holder, it’s almost better that way. We find ourselves using these bowls a lot – for way more than just ramen. The thickness of the ceramic makes these well-insulated, keeping your meal exactly as intended, heat-wise.

Pros:

  • Aesthetically pleasing with a smooth matte finish and a striking, shiny red interior.
  • These bowls are large. When filled exactly to the brim, they’ll hold 40 ounces.
  • We like how heavy these bowls feel in your hand. Although ceramic, they’re durable and chip-resistant.

Cons:

  • Although microwave-safe, they don’t function very well for reheating in the microwave. It’s best to add hot meals to the bowls rather than use them in the microwave.

Happy Sales Multi-Purpose Japanese Design Ceramic Ramen Bowl with Condiment Lid

Put a lid on it

With a compartmentalized lid, this ramen bowl set is more than just pretty – it's functional, too.
Best With Lid

Find on Amazon

Six inches in diameter with a convenient (and beautiful) condiment lid, this ceramic bowl is made for ramen but works for so many other dishes as well. Although shallow, the compartment lid has three built-in separators for toppings. One of my personal favorite features? Even with the lid on, the chopsticks fit in the bowl. With this unique design, you can poke the chopsticks through the holes that sit just underneath the rim of the bowl. Each bowl set comes with a bowl, lid, and chopstick set. That’s maybe the only downfall here, as the price tag on these is a tad higher. The bowls are just so pretty, we want one in every color.

Pros:

  • Multiple colors and design options available.
  • Can be used for a variety of Japanese-inspired dishes.
  • Microwave- and dishwasher-safe.

Cons:

  • Only holds about 18-20 fluid ounces before reaching the chopstick holes. While we love the design of the lid, that makes these a smaller bowl than is traditional.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should you look for in a high-quality, traditional Japanese ramen bowl?

While it’s not completely necessary to eat out of a ramen bowl for ramen, it really does take your ramen experience to the next level. There’s just something about it that feels authentically appropriate. Plus, they are called ramen bowls for a very specific set of reasons. First, a proper ramen bowl is designed to hold the perfect ratio of each ingredient. Moreover, they typically have design features for eating ramen. Typically, they have notches for chopsticks, a depth that perfectly holds a mini ramen ladle, and often, gorgeous, Japanese-inspired artwork. Is traditional ramen considered a healthy meal?

Wondering about the nutritional content of a yummy ramen bowl? While we can’t speak for those brightly colored ramen packages that line the aisles of your local grocery store (you know the ones), we can say that traditional ramen is certainly healthier. Although still a bit high in sodium, ramen can contain a variety of insanely delicious veggies and nutrient-rich eggs. Sure, it can be a bit unhealthy depending on how you do it up, but it doesn’t have to be. Regardless, ramen is a delicious dish that, healthy or not, we just can’t get enough of. Just ask my neighbor.
