The Best Tailgate Tents

The Best Tailgate Tents

If you enjoy getting away to places that are only accessible with four-wheel drive, a truck bed tent is perfect for your camping trips. What's unique about a truck bed tent is that you don't need a designated camping space — if your truck can get there, you can camp there. There are no ladders or overhangs to worry about, and you can maintain a height advantage with protection from ground conditions. If you're looking for a truck bed tent, the style will depend on your personal preference and the model of your truck or SUV. Here are some of our favorites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a truck bed tent be used on the ground?

Truck bed tents are specifically designed to be used in a truck bed or SUV of a specific size. While you could set it up on the ground, there is no way to stake the tent or keep it upright by using the clipping system that works with your vehicle.

How do you measure the length of your truck bed for a tent?

First, put the tailgate up. Measure from the edge of the bed nearest the cab and extend the measuring tape until you reach the inside of the tailgate. Don’t measure along the top of the bed — measure along the bottom.

Will the SUV tent work on a car with a side-opening hatchback?

For the most part, yes. The straps and buckles that attach to your bumper can also be adapted to attach to the side of your car. However, the best-case scenario is that your SUV has a rack on top, which can be used to latch down the side of the tent opposite of your hatchback door.
